¿What is chess960?

I am not going to delve much into this page about what chess960 is and where it comes from, it is not the objective of this website, an Internet search can take you to thousands of pages where they explain it to you.

Here I am going to give you a series of tips with links where you can find a more detailed description, rules and history.

Chess960 or Fischer Random Chess (as it is known today) was announced by world chess champion Bobby Fischer on June 19, 1996 in Buenos Aires (Argentina).

Basically the variation of chess960 or FRC compared to classical chess consists of the fact that instead of starting with the universal starting position of chess that every chess player knows, it is that it can vary as long as it complies with the following rules:

  • The initial position between both sides must be symmetrical

  • For each of the players the pawns have to be in the second row and the rest of the pieces in the first row

  • On each side the bishops must be positioned in squares of different colors.

  • The king must be between the two towers

If we take these rules into account and make all the combinations, a total of 960 different starting positions come out, hence the name chess960.

There is some kind of quirk to explain like castling, but it all follows the rules of modern chess as we know it today.
